M1

If you're venturing cross-country between the M1 and A1(M) near Northampton, factor in a detour for lunch or picnic provisions at The Deli @ Castle Ashby with its new, Mediterranean-influenced café.

They're part of a quadrant of old stone buildings that's full of browsable boutiques - think country wear, antiques and Scandinavian gifts. Helen runs the foodie show, laying on an impressive selection of local and European products from Iberico ham and Neal's Yard cheese to chocolate-covered liquorice. The café is white, fresh and minimalist. Black rafters cross high ceilings and bright plants add colour as you tuck into your tapas with a glass of chilled kombucha or organic wine. The open crab sandwich on sourdough and burnt Basque cheesecake get our nod.

Castle Ashby Gardens (a few minutes away) are a delightful spot for a leg-stretch, complete with topiary-lined paths, an Orangery and an Arboretum.
