Like something from a sweeping Merchant Ivory epic, Nymans is a garden lover's home for all seasons. This medieval-styled mansion was almost completely consumed by a fire in 1947 and is now part house, part ruin.
If you have little ones, head for the natural Play Glade for den building and games to expend that pent-up car energy. Have lunch at the licensed café or gather some impromptu picnic materials from the Horsebox. In summer, the Sussex Dairy ice cream is delicious - try a scoop of Brighton Rock flavour. The Riding House tea-room at the garden's heart (open weekends 11am-3pm) is a contemporary conversion that retains some lovely original features; enjoy views over fields and woods from its mezzanine.
The horticulturally curious should come for the spring borders, the acclaimed wisterias, the rare plant collections in the Grade-II listed gardens and the ancient woodlands and cascades. The views across the Sussex Weald are restorative. Please note that admission charges for non-NT members apply.
