Ever since the duck pond in Bredgar's village centre was restored as part of the Queen's Jubilee celebrations, house searches here have gone through the roof. It seems everyone wants to live among the beautifully preserved 15th- and 16th-century houses of this Kent hotspot. Who can blame them?
Bredgar's distinctive, black-beamed Farm Shop occupies pole position on the pond. It's got a tea-room and garden (for sit-down breakfasts, filled French sticks and cream teas) plus plants and a Kentish craft and gift section to plunder. Colourful piles of fruit and veg arrive daily from local growers and the crusty cobs, sausage rolls and jammy doughnuts are bakery-fresh. Try a Kentish Mayde pastry with a glass of crisp local apple juice, wine or cider.
The village has a lovely silver shop in which to browse and, on summer Saturdays, trainspotters can travel on the Bredgar and Wormshill Light Railway. If going twitching in the Elmley Nature Reserve, you could buy your picnic ingredients here.
