A9

This red and white, blink-and-you'll-miss-it café in Carrbridge (gateway to the Cairngorms National Park) teaches coffee and snack seekers a very important lesson: don't blink!

The Croft Café, in the old bakery building, is a lovely little spot that is ethically run by New Zealander, Dave. He gathers eggs (fresh from his own working croft) when behind the scenes and conjures up top-notch soups, scones, quiches, brownies and hot chocolate when on centre stage. The coffee - from the Highlands' Vandyke Bros - is served with expertly swirled-in milk and the full breakfast features local haggis and black pudding.

Dave hopes your food tastes better for knowing where it's come from and that you enjoy the Cairngorms. It's all about connecting at a local level: his insider intel and secret swim spots are on tap for your ears only. Visit the Highlands' oldest stone bridge or buy arty souvenirs or local heather honey and chutney for your picnic in the ancient pine forests before heading on.
