A9

The adage 'arrive a stranger, leave a friend' could have been written for this happy, homely art café in Kincraig. Run by Toni, Ann and their learning-the-ropes son Luca, it's as family-run as can be. You'll spot The Old Post Office's eye-catching red canopy as you pass through Kincraig, a Highlands village at the heart of the dramatic Cairngorms National Park.

Running the café and gallery is a long-held dream for the pair, for it combines Ann's love for landscape art - on permanent rolling exhibition - with Toni's Italian-inspired cooking. Toni says, "We shop seasonally to showcase the best of Kincraig and bonnie Badenoch beyond. Local specialities include Rosie's sourdough from the Brae and Glen Feshie smoked salmon, with local crafts on show, too." Come for the authentic pasta, the wild boar ragù or a sticky slice of raspberry-topped amaretto and cardamom cake.

With golden eagle spotting nearby and year-round watersports available at Loch Insh, this is an area to return to time and again.
