It's curiously more satisfying to discover a surprisingly good café in the unlikeliest of places than it is to walk into one that's predictably good. On this scale, The Hideout Lounge rates very highly, brightening up a small business park just off the M5 north of Bristol with its colourful interior and lamp-lit outdoor marquee. Popular with those in the know, it's a great spot to warm up in following a wild swim at nearby Cromhall Quarry.
This Blue Ribbon award-winning spot is full of space, sofas and smiles. Matt, Dan and Kim steer this family-run ship and love to see a contented customer. Their hand-chalked sign, 'When you support a small business, you support a dream' sums up their appreciation. Inside, the homemade cakes, fresh bakes, Bristol Twenty coffee and Marshfield ice cream speak for themselves. Fill a brunch-shaped hole with Chorizo Eggs Benny or a Steak and Egg Sourdough, or opt for a panini, sandwich or weekday lunch special. Bold art brightens the walls, tabletops have colourful enamel designs and low sofas attract loungers.
