A378

The folk at The Bridge were so proudly independent (and keen to join The Extra Mile) that we're unsure who's happiest to now have them in the book, them or us! At The Bridge, single-use plastic is banned, Bruton Dairy's organic milk arrives in churns and each suppliers' ethics are vetted. Even the Homewood sheep's cheese comes wrapped in insulating wool.

Claire and her team bake stacks of organic sourdough and pastries daily, ready for the brunch rush. It's an informal, relaxed space with a small but interesting menu, good coffee and some favourite local beers, ciders and lemonades. Try a seed-topped halloumi toast, a warm BLT croissant or a spelt tart. Rub shoulders with local cyclists on the chunky benches or take your coffee and pain aux raisins out to the covered riverside seating to admire the arches of Great Bow Bridge.

The town's 13th-century Hanging Chapel is worth a peek while here; tack on a river Parrett roam before setting off.
