'To give up on gilded tea sets is to give up on life' could well be the motto of this delightful vintage tea-room. You'll find it behind Main Street in the conservation village of Bothwell, where Claire and Alex are busy mis-matching crockery from breakfast through to afternoon tea.

The Hidden Teahouse is renowned for its in-house baking and the reveal of each new creation needs its own 'tah dah.' The tea (and tea cocktail) range of over 30 varieties is predictably good, with ethically-sourced teas, herbal infusions and fruit blends from Suki Teas and the Kent and Sussex Tea Co. Don't panic: they let coffee lovers in, too.

Breakfast might be a bacon and maple syrup pancake, mini brioche or granola with yogurt and fresh berries. Lunchtime sandwiches are substantial, fresh scones march out of the oven in neat procession and soups simmer in the wings. There are Wee Teas for small appetites plus a children's menu. Dogs are welcome on the decked area outside.
