Pretty Boroughbridge is bounded by rolling hills and pockets of history. Stroll along the river Ure or the town's ancient standing stones, known as the Devil’s Arrows, as Satan flung them there himself - apparently. Refuel at Bowe & Co, a relaxed and friendly High Street café-deli. Lunch is wholesome, generous and freshly made. Regulars rave about the salads, which are served alongside soups (such as beetroot and horseradish), quiches and frittatas.

Their go-to Yorkshire platter is an enormous pile of salads, cooked ham, cheese, crisps and a pork pie. Cakes are playful – try the coconut and Malibu or raspberry and amaretto. The coffee is allegedly 'the best in the *proper world', with their asterix denoting Yorkshire, of course. The tea (also Yorkshire) needs no introduction. The deli counter is ripe for plundering: fabulous cheeses, sandwiches (the local roast beef is excellent) and anti-pasti. Turn up hungry and leave gloriously sated.
