M6

The Queen's Head pub has been restored by the Lowther family, of Askham Hall, whose masterplan is to develop a destination pub and health hub in this pretty Lake District village. Lovers of fine food are in for a treat at their reimagined 17th-century village pub with its copper-topped bar and stylish rooms.

The seasonal menu is super posh. It features gifts from the family's lands and kitchen gardens, whether reared or hedgerow-foraged. Think earthy truffle with creamy artichoke; deep-flavoured seasonal game and home-reared saddleback pork; hand-dived scallops and local lobster; brassicas, herby pesto and orchard fruits. An AA Rosette arrived in 2022 and the wine list was compiled by the sommelier at the pub's Michelin-starred big sister, Askham Hall proper. Stroll the local fells or follow the river Lowther from the door. Overnight guests can take a summer dip in the Hall's outdoor pool (call ahead to confirm).
