A72

Above Innerleithen, in the heart of the Tweed valley, is Caberston Forest. Take a woodland wander to spot the sculptures of local artist Mary Kenny (depicting the region’s history) or head up to Pirn Hill's Iron Age hill fort for commanding valley views.

Back in town, Loulabelle's drips with good food accolades for its admirably homemade (and 'special diet inclusive') menus. Opt for a made-that-morning flatbread with house special pesto, hummus or falafel followed by a home-baked cake; or try the blue cheese with pear and blueberry compôte pancakes which are divine. Muddy paws and soggy jackets are welcome, and the Scotland-roasted coffee and roaring fire will quickly lift weather-worn spirits. Sustainability matters at this Blue Ribbon rated pit-stop: the take-out kit is biodegradable and the coffee supplier is heading for carbon neutrality. Sprocket and Reba, the café dogs, keenly await new visitors to what is one of the best wee cafés in the Borders.

This region is outdoor adventure central. After cramming in some cake, hire a bike to explore the forest trails at nearby Glentress.
