If you sense déjà vu on arrival in Blackness-on-Sea, your mind isn't playing tricks. You may well have seen the village's 15th-century castle on historical or fantastical TV programmes as it is one of Scotland's most impressive strongholds ('Outlander' is a recent claim to fame).

The Lobster Pot is the colourful pub waiting to round off your visit, and it will surprise no-one that lobster is big news in this nautically decorated haunt. Choose from grilled whole lobster dripping with garlic butter, lobster thermidor with brandy and mustard cream, or the seafood platter with hot-smoked salmon and Arbroath smoked mackerel paté. Landlubbers might prefer the haggis fritters followed by a classic pub pud or affogato with soft-serve ice-cream.

The pub has a small village store open daily from noon and also nurtures its own rose bushes at the nursery next door; pay for your favourite at the bar then get back to the castle-spotting or beach-hopping.
