A75

The seaside 'Artists' Town' of Kirkcudbright (kir-coo-bree) is the Solway coast's only working harbour. Its streets are a colourful crush of Victorian, Georgian and medieval buildings which today house arty hang-outs, galleries and creative hubs like the Tolbooth Arts Centre.

Egyptian street food is perhaps not the most obvious thing you'd expect to see on a specials' board in a Scottish village, but it's exactly the kind of Mediterranean-inspired dish you might find here at Feast café. Tammy and her team really do love the unusual: the fig and bramble-topped Hedgerow cakes are mini works of art (and the pear and pecan cake takes some beating). Everything is home-cooked, fresh and seasonal, from the petal-topped salads to the rosemary-scented focaccia. The monthly supper clubs are popular.

Visit the Harbour Cottage Gallery, stroll past the ruins of the 16th-century MacLellan's Castle or enjoy the Japanese gardens at Broughton House before delving further into Dumfries.
