A75

Passion before profit is the mantra at the Riverside Tap, a craft beer emporium across the river from Dumfries's Robert Burns Centre. Uncommonly for a pub, it is run purely for the love of Europe's best beers, with founder Andrew taking no income from the business at all. Andrew: we salute you.

Inspired by the talented craft brewers at Portugal's spectacular Artbeerfest and beyond, Andrew launched his bridge-building Beer Without Borders project in this listed building in 2018. Pavement tables now bustle beneath fluttering member-state flags (Hungary, Sweden, Estonia) while its 12 taps offer best-in-class Scottish and European beers and ciders with a 200-strong supporting cast of bottles and eye-catching cans. Tea, coffee and bar meals are on offer and the cosy beer garden and live music gigs keep the mood sunny.

Andrew's plans for a Dumfries microbrewery are advanced and you can hit the Castle Douglas bottle shop if heading west for a star-gazing stay in the region's Dark Sky Park.
