M48

As her name portends, Daisy the new manager has brought a splash of vibrancy and a fresh feel to the rustic, 17th-century White Hart pub. It's in picturesque Littleton-upon-Severn, near the M48 yet just 10-12 minutes from the M4. Subtle touches show that the building is loved, with fresh posies on tables and genuinely helpful staff on hand for menu pointers.

A former farmhouse that retains some original features, The White Hart now beckons in the hungry with a menu of British gastro pub treats and traditional, orchard-fresh cider. The beetroot-cured trout or ox cheek croquettes followed by confit duck leg are a safe bet.

There are orchards to explore in the sprawling back garden, with views that reach over the river Severn to rural Wales beyond. Ideas are afoot for outdoor cinema screenings, campervan overnighting and other community-focused gatherings, making this a useful staging post if travelling between the wilds of West Wales and the Big Smoke.
