A9

Cocoa Skye is our most northerly find, on Scotland's east-facing coast between Dornoch and Wick. It hugs the A9, a road that forms the backbone of myriad Scottish adventures from the North Coast 500 touring route to countless John o'Groats to Land's End challenges. With coffee and cake at the ready and hot-chocolate whipping and topping skills primed, Wendy and her crew's friendly welcomes await.

The café is in Brora, a solid, riverside village of stone bridges and low buildings. Its golden, sloping beach is fringed with Jurassic rocks and visited by dolphins, minke whales and seals. After enjoying a coastal walk or wildlife spot, head in for an artisanal hot chocolate - syrups and sprinkles optional - slab of creamy coffee cake or pot of steaming tea. Lunch options are criminally sweet (caramel crunch or strawberry Belgian waffles) or savoury (salads of Scottish smoked salmon or goats' cheese, fig and prosciutto). Pick up some handmade choccies featuring local heather honey for later.
