Carlyle House Café

Haddington, known as 'the hidden toun' for the way it sits in its rural location, is an attractive spot with bridges over the Tyne. It's home to Amisfield, one of Scotland's largest walled gardens (free to visit).

In town, Carlyle House Café is through the archway of a grand 18th-century building that's rich with Corinthian detailing. It's another string to owners' Roy and Mhairi's bow: they honed their foodie skills at cafés in the region's cultural centres and are known for coffee importing, pioneering pop-ups and having their fingers in many of Edinburgh's arty pies. Their bright café is perfect for interesting eavesdropping as you tuck into a countryside platter, smoked haddock risotto verde or warm, deep-filled quiche with crispy potatoes. Flavours are fresh and most dishes are homemade, from hearty soups with soda bread to nutty, fruity salads and an array of scones, cakes and slices. The pecan pie is a sticky hit.

If popping north to Yellowcraig beach afterwards, assemble your picnic at their farm shop and café (called Fenton Barns) which lies between you and the sea.
