We loved both the name of this shop and its motto: first with the eyes. Everything in this petite bakery really does have great aesthetic appeal and begs to be nibbled, tasted or toasted, from the creatively finished sourdough boules to the fruit or rich choc tartlets and cream-slathered layer cakes.

In the tiny conservation village of Dunlop, this European-styled village shop is a chic surprise. Overlooked by arty prints, it has fine meats and cheeses from near and far (Dunlop made its name in the dairy industry in the 1600s). Glasgow commuters living nearby prefer working from home, as they get to pop in for take-away coffee, croissants, speciality deli finds and a morning chat with owners, Morven and Piero. Hampers or pizza dough with toppings from olives to smoked salmon are popular with travellers heading to the West Coast and planning their first-night holiday meal.

It's take-away only (outside seating is planned) so if aiming for the Ardrossan ferry to Arran, add a fly-by to your route.
