The 7stanes are a collection of mountain-bike trail centres in Forestry and Land Scotland locations across southern Scotland. Stane is the Scots word for stone and many of these award-winning spots - with biking, bike hire and brilliant eats in a forest-wrapped setting - have a stone sculpture to seek out.
If exploring Galloway or running early for your Stranraer ferry, it's good to know that you needn't be a biker to feast on the cracking food at the Kirroughtree Visitor Centre Café. The local bike club has menu items named after it: look out for their Galloway Hillbillies and Hillfillies specials. The Breakpad Bike Shop next door has the region's largest bike hire fleet should you have the urge to explore some of this beautiful area's 60km of trails.
Enjoy vast, forested views through the huge windows or perch at a picnic bench to warm up with a hot chocolate beneath the star-sprayed sky of Galloway's Dark Sky Park. The small parking charge is worth it for the state-of-the-art Changing Places wash facility alone.
