If you're ogling counters full of pies topped with birthday greetings; multi-tiered pork pie wedding cakes; and pies glazed and stuffed with the most delicious local ingredients, you must be in Warrington's Pie Shop of the Year 2022: To Pie For. They have almost as many Melton Mowbray Pork Pie awards as they do varieties.
The pies - which come hot with mash, peas and gravy options or cold to go - are hand-crimped with humour. Crafted with top-shelf fillings (with pork from Houghton's, the North West's butcher of the year in 2022), they sell out at food markets, with the firecracker sausage rolls zooming off the shelves, too. Tasty fillings include pork, black pudding and pear; and cheese, potato and onion. There are vegan curries plus cakes and deli sandwiches too - the pastrami-packed 'Reuben' on toasted rye would please any New York policeman.
With pies weighing in at around half a kilo each, check your tyre pressure before rejoining the road.
