Alice, Jack and their home-grown kitchen heroes do a fantastic job in The Orchard Kitchen, a new arrival found above one of Devon's finest stove and fire bowl destinations, Dean Forge.
Sharing the airy attic with a classy home interior and gift shop, the café's bi-fold doors and balcony allow for al fresco fun. The ever-changing menu is built on dependably seasonal local ingredients and most of the dishes are made on site, down to the oils, chutneys and cordials housed in recycled soft drink glassware. The elderflower iced tea is heaven-scented and the rhubarb yoyos manage to taste even better than they look.
Soups, sourdough sandwiches and brunch are available all day and the seasonally textured wholefood bowls are popular. Deli options include an ever-changing selection of homemade sausage rolls, frittatas and Devonshire pasties. The cakes, often flower-strewn, are best enjoyed with a coffee from ethical roastery, Voyager, of Buckfastleigh.
