A303

If you venture south off the A303 in South Petherton you'll enter a rural idyll, driving past abundant orchards and farmlands to find The Royal Oak in the envy-inducing village of Over Stratton.

Fond reviews for this thatch-roofed country pub heave with mentions of warm welcomes, excellent local food and attentive service. Ian and Bex (assisted by canine assistants Minnie and Leonard) really have honed this hosting game to perfection. West Country coffee and local ales are on tap, with fresh produce from South Petherton providing a true taste of Somerset (the multi award-winning cheese board shouldn't be missed).

Time it right and your visit might coincide with a Korean barbecue or Moroccan evening. Settle into a nook of the 16th-century converted farmhouse or find a sunny spot in the large garden to tuck into house classics like wild mushroom risotto or a succulent steak topped with roast-wrinkled vine tomatoes.
