Natural Surroundings is an eight-acre wildlife reserve and Norfolk's Wildflower Centre, with a plant-encircled hideout of a cafe in a wonderful, wildlife-friendly garden.
At the end of a driveway flanked by gargantuan-leaved plants, the café, gardens and nursery are run by experienced horticulturalists and authors, Anne and Simon Harrap. Their knowledge and the variety of plants (including 'micro-meadows' planted in half-barrels) are impressive.
The cafe has a cosy, living room feel and offers good coffee, cakes and light lunches. The Tea Garden's terrace offers seating among some of their favourite specimens. Sit down with a tea and slice of gooey mocha cake as butterflies tangle and tango overhead.
The Tea Garden and nursery are free for cafe dwellers to explore. A small fee opens up the 20 demonstration gardens, which show how wildlife-friendly gardening works. Wander down to the river Glaven, a scenic and rare ‘chalk river’ before journeying onwards, refreshed.
