What do you do when your 18th-century village pub closes down? You buy and reinvent it, of course. Three local families now run The George Inn and Bike Shed Café: a perfect stop off if leaving the M5 to visit Bristol or the mansion house (and MTB trails) at Ashton Court.
In the pub, cavernous ceilings and the large walled suntrap of a garden are both delightful surprises. Leather and hide seats and sofas gather round wood burners for toasty evening visits. The kitchen is kept busy from breakfast till close with a comprehensive menu of pub classics; opt for dirty fries and burgers in brioche buns or a steak, salad or garlic and truffle mushrooms main; sourdough pizzas are the new kid on The George's block.
The Bike Shed Café feeds the myriad bikers and hikers who pound the local trails of Leigh Woods, an area known for its extravagant spring bluebells. Expect bike paraphernalia, Extract Coffee (Bristol) and sufficient cake to fuel a Tour de France climb.
