History buffs will be spoiled by Farnham, a Georgian market town with fascinating buildings and craft heritage in Surrey's rolling hills. In Roman times it was a pottery hot-spot due to its seams of Gault clay and the excellent Roman road network that aided routes to market.
The Hobo.Co at The Pottery is in a feature-packed Victorian building between two working potteries. Peek through the cartwheel windows then enter through huge, thrown-open wooden doors. Emily (the self-proclaimed 'speediest baker in the land') bakes cakes and makes soups, toasties and pastries on site; the oven-fresh cheese, chive and cayenne scones and tarragon sausage rolls are spot on. Settle in with a freshly-ground cuppa, an uplifting tea, a homemade lemonade or some spiced winter berry juice.
You'll find art, yoga and music events and a communal, creative hub vibe here. Set off refreshed to hike the Pilgrim's Way or visit 12th-century Farnham Castle. Founder Sebastian also runs the quirky Hobo.Co at The Shed (see p358).
