If following the A21 to Hastings you'll almost trip over Eggs to Apples - a long, low-profile wood-clad building near the roadside within the High Weald AONB. This is an ancient landscape of scattered farmsteads about which Hilaire Belloc wrote, 'Unless a man understands the Weald, he cannot easily write about the beginnings of England'.
Whether you're exploring the Weald's wildlife havens or like the idea of ordering a 'Hamper for Glampers', this farm shop and café make an excellent journey breaker. Husband-and-wife team Susannah and Craig run the show today, their modern building based on the site of Susannah's grandfather's original farm shop. The shop brims with ripe fruit and veg, Fresh Dough Bakery bread, cheese, charcuterie, flowers and wine, with many suppliers based within a 25-mile radius. The café does an excellent ham, gruyère and mustard croissant; its soups (with feta scones), focaccia pizzas and sharing plates are memorable. Check ahead for tastings and events.
