A1

When you’ve had enough of the tailbacks, few things will cheer you up quite like a field full of woolly-faced alpacas. Clare and Martin have reared alpacas here since 2005 (the herd numbers over 90), displaying their colourful wool in the shop. The attraction now has a café with rural views across the rolling fields of Lincolnshire; a visitor centre in funky converted shipping containers; and Alpaca Meet and Greets, Experiences and Treks.

Watch the animals gambolling as you polish off a toasted panini, bacon roll, generous slice of cake or yummy hot chocolate with all the trimmings. The coffee is endorsed by the strictest of coffee snobs. For a small charge (the selfies will be priceless) follow the Woodland Wander to see the alpacas up-close and to wildlife-spot between the trees and lakes. The centre and coffee shop are free to enter. Nearby Newark-on-Trent is worth a visit for its Air Museum and the award-winning gardens and ruins of 12th-century Newark Castle.
