The wonderfully named village of Spinkhill is lucky to have the Angel and Harlequin. In fact, the Angel is lucky to have Spinkhill, since villagers stepped in to rescue it from development into flats only a few years ago.
Chris and Jean took the helm instead, metamorphosing the former pub into a cracking and very welcoming bistro. It’s open from 9am each day for breakfast and continues whizzing seasonal ingredients into tasty dishes throughout the day: filled bagels, lentil and sweet potato curry, roast tomato soup and wild boar ravioli. Cosy nooks with chevron-detailed tables next to the fire are an ideal spot for a coffee and slice of cake from the in-house pastry chef; it’s hard to beat a slice of the coconut and rum.
If you haven’t time to stop and make the most of the slouchy Chesterfields and a chat with the natives, the pizza oven produces very good takeaways: call ahead to have it waiting.
