When we first met James and Nina they were busy with their excellent cafe and bakery the Three Hares. It proved such a success that they snapped up the forlorn pub down the road and worked their same magic.
Now the Black Bull has been refurbished with easy-going style to create a smart neighbourhood local. The pair is hands-on and passionate about provenance – from Herdwick blankets to locally roasted artisan coffee. Nina bakes the breakfast bread and pastries, they do their own smoking and curing and there’s a little kitchen garden at the back. Sample their inventive cooking at a table by the fire in the bar or in the airy restaurant with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street.
It’s a short stroll to all the town’s attractions, which include restaurants, antiques, a weekly farmers’ market and heaps of book shops. Sedbergh is England’s official Book Town, so even the bus shelter has a selection.
