After his extensive travels, Mohamed decided that Batley was missing a brunch spot and meeting point, and immediately resolved to fix that. Leaping on the opportunity of an empty job centre, he enlisted the help of his family and set about stripping out the office fittings and replacing them with tiled walls, modern lighting and a wood-clad counter that wouldn’t look out of place in any major city worldwide. (If you think it looks familiar it was used as a set for BBC’s ‘Last Tango in Halifax’.)
A steady stream of happy groups flow to tables beneath the luminous sky lantern to either linger over smooth coffees or order up hearty plates. Fresh bread and cakes are handmade by a local bakery; gourmet sausages and rashers from another nearby producer. Creative flavour combinations are a nod to the team’s travels and heritage, perhaps shakshuka, Indian-style thali breakfast, cinnamon buns or croissant loaf with berry compote.
Somewhat uniquely for brunch joints like this, it’s also halal.
