M6

Pioneer has only recently flung open the doors to its new food hall and café, and it’s already a hit with locals and travellers. It’s just off the M6 in the city’s Rosehill estate and a haven for foodies.

Mimicking traditional market stalls, the large space stocks Cumbrian food on a supermarket scale, with butchery, deli and bakery counters supplementing the shelves of fresh produce. Choose from local beef, barbecue-ready burgers and their own version of the Cumberland sausage at the butcher’s, warm bread, scones or a handmade sausage roll at the bakery. One happy customer called it “the best food store I’ve ever seen”.

There’s a Grab & Go counter for sandwiches and salads to take away, but if you’ve got time, make it a longer stop at the lively 1878 Coffee Lounge upstairs. Head chef Ian sends an endless stream of plates
out to booths and tables in the smart café: award-winning Cumberland sausages, sandwiches on in-house bread, and filling breakfasts.
