Handsome Castle Douglas is an 18th-century market town in the heart of one of Scotland’s most productive farming regions. Its high street has a selection of wander-worthy shops and cafés, but our favourite place to refuel is Streetlights.
Karen makes as much food in the kitchen as possible, cheerily serving delicious plates from behind a wood clad counter hung with vintage lights. The bacon baps are frequently praised and the baking prowess evident in the multi-layered cakes and meringues. Grab a table at lunch for a bowl of homemade soup or a barista coffee and slice for an afternoon pick-me-up, perhaps sticky date or banoffee. Dogs are welcome and will be showered with fuss and treats.
Galloway Forest Park was the first in the UK to be designated a Dark Sky Park, so stargazers should consider a longer stop in the area for a real glimpse of the universe.
