A friendly welcome awaits at The Hearth Cafe, a real taste of the region and a mine of North Eastern creativity. Two and 10 minutes from the A69 and A1 respectively, this 17th-century manse house is Horsley's community hub. The Hearth Arts Centre and Café supports local heritage, arts, wellbeing and... cake cravings. It has vibrant exhibitions and workshops plus tenant artists who create and sell their ceramics, jewellery, paintings and textiles on site.

The café's windows fog up in winter with the hubbub of happy visitors and dog walkers warming themselves within. Snack on delicious home baking, such as Nutella & chocolate chip shortbread or homemade cheese scones, washed down with proper coffee, or opt for something more substantial. One visitor named the eggs Benedict the best they’d ever had (breakfast is served all day). The menu changes regularly, perhaps try the cajun pulled chicken panini, sweet potato pakoras, or field mushrooms with caramelised red onion chutney and melted goats cheese.

The terrace tables have gorgeous Tyne valley views; parking is up the hill.
