A69

A real taste of the region awaits at the friendly Hearth Café, which is a mine of north-eastern creativity. Two minutes from the A69 (and 10 from the A1), this 17th-century manse house is Horsley's community hub whose Arts Centre and Café supports local heritage, arts, wellbeing and... cake cravings. It hosts exhibitions and workshops plus tenant artists who sell their ceramics, jewellery and paintings on site.

The café's windows fog up in winter with the hubbub of happy visitors, as dog walkers warm themselves within. Snack on delicious home baking such as Nutella and choc-chip shortbread or cheese scones with a cup of proper coffee, or opt for something more substantial. Breakfast is served all day: the Eggs Benedict garner rave reviews. The menu changes often: try the Cajun pulled-chicken panini, sweet potato pakoras or field mushrooms with red-onion chutney and melted goats' cheese. The terrace tables have gorgeous Tyne valley views; parking is up the hill.
