The Dickensian windows of That Tea Room in Howden set the scene for Sam and Jo’s traditional tea shop. The building itself is fascinating, with internal windows and pillars hinting at a long history of trade, and today it’s tasty fare that draws the crowds. The counter is crammed with tantalising homemade cakes, and the chalkboard features regularly rotating specials, perhaps sweet chilli chicken and vegetable flatbread, goats’ cheese bruschetta or salmon and dill fishcakes.

There are rooms at the back and upstairs to choose from, but our favourite is the teapot room where the ceiling is hung with hundreds of china pots.

Howden itself has a history stretching back to King Edgar and William the Conquerer, and warrants a wander to see the ruins of the once-famous Minster, learn about the horse fair that drew people from across the continent, and follow the intriguing airship trail.
