A38

Ashburton is a delightful town on the southern slopes of Dartmoor in the heart of the South Devon countryside; its high street could give Totnes a run for its money with a great range of butchers, bakers and artisan producers.

Rafikis is awash with colour, bright and vibrant on the inside and out and the food is as colourful as the décor. Founded by a world traveller and explorer who hangs up her boots in Devon, the café specialises in recipes gathered from around the world. Ingredients are seasonal and ethical but prices are reasonable. All dishes are vegetarian and will leave any carnivore doubting their dietary regime; the Vietnamese banh mi (a stuffed spicy baguette) is a particular house favourite. There are specialities you’ll struggle to find elsewhere: Canadian pancakes with coconut blossom syrup or the kimchi potato cakes with eggs and spicy ragu; bold and original food, done to perfection.

For sweeter cravings the counter is awash with daily-baked goods: salted caramel brownies, fresh scones, slices of chocolate, banana and walnut cake. Parking is yards away.
