Just over the road from the school and in the heart of the village, Elk is a real community hub and owner Emilio actively encourages people to pop in, whether to send a few emails, grab a coffee after the school run or meet friends.
The décor is stylish – white tiles, tan leather seats and a black ceiling – and large windows looking onto the street (a relic from the building’s former life as an estate agent) provide the perfect spot for people watching.
The kitchen is teeny tiny so food is largely light, but the menu is very tasty and changes frequently – expect anything from gluten-free cakes to cheese toasties and scones. Coffee is the real focus – with beans from local roastery The Brew Project – and the flat white is excellent. Hot drinks are available to take away, or, if the weather allows, you can soak up village life at one of the pavement tables.
