Crazy Bear seems an appropriate moniker for a group that encompasses hotels, restaurants, bars, a members’ club and farm. Keen to guarantee the provenance of the ingredients in their restaurants, the team bought an 80-acre farm in the heart of Oxfordshire to rear top-notch meat according to traditional methods, and they’ve added their signature pizzazz to the farm shop that has grown up alongside.
Wicker shopping baskets hang above the deli and butchery counters, from which a steady stream of customers are plied with home-smoked meats, sausage rolls, quiche, cheeses and meat cuts from the farm’s own stock. Tables in front practically sag beneath the weight of the free-range eggs, loaves and cakes piled on top.
Head through the sliding door at the back to find the restaurant, which serves the ingredients as the chefs intended in a rustic, wild-west kind of setting: filled sandwiches, burgers, soups, pies and the popular afternoon teas.
Kids will love the play area and animal pens out front, where they can meet goats, pigs, llamas and reindeer while parents keep watch from the veranda.
