Balsham’s former butcher’s shop has been at the centre of village life for more than 300 years. But today the sawdust has been swept away, replaced by a lovely café.
Beneath the low thatched roof, tasty local produce is whipped up into quiches, sandwiches, cakes and smoothies. The countryside setting is reflected in the ingredients, so you might find rabbit pie or homemade scotch eggs on the menu, alongside the more usual suspects such as bacon rolls, seasonal soups and Chelsea buns. The wide pavement outside lends itself to kerbside seating, and makes it a popular spot for cyclists and horse riders.
In the shop alongside there’s a small but perfectly formed selection of gifts and produce, so if you leave without a loaf of bread, bag of fudge or new favourite mug, you’re stronger than us.
