Whether feasting in the café, browsing for crafts and gifts or chatting to the butcher about the best cut for dinner, Tre, Pol & Pen has something for everyone. It’s a modern farm shop – its sharp lines striking against the rural landscape – and the team are fierce advocates of local food. Everything is handpicked from the seaweed salami to Ruby Red beef from the herd outside, there's also wildflower honey, Cornish cheese and rose gin.

Grocery shop done, head to the Kitchen to taste these fine flavours. Breakfasts are farm-worthy, lunch might be sausage and mash, crayfish and salmon or a spiced falafel salad and the pizzas are first-rate. The restaurant and terrace have plenty of space and overlook the lake; a play area is within eyeshot for the children. Dogs can be put through their paces in the ‘top field’ alongside the car park and, if you’re in a hurry, the Shepherd’s hut take-away sells fresh coffee, baps, baked goods and ice cream.

The name comes from an old Cornish rhyme: “By Tre, Pol and Pen, Shall ye know all Cornishmen”. The words mean homestead, pool and hill: fitting for a hillside farm next to an ancient spring.
