Opposite the conical ‘village lock up’, this listed building’s former life as a farrier’s lends it its name, and the stables are still standing out the back, only now turned over to an artisan chocolate maker and small antiques shop.
Ian and Jennie have revitalised the interior with a good eye for design and pleasing reuse of materials: old floorboards provide wood panelling, a stone window frame has been turned into a grand fireplace and a former garden step now leads to the loos. Reclaimed materials stand alongside seagrass matts, antique pews, tables and chairs, and the crowning glory is the Victorian display counter which proudly displays the chocolates made in the yard.
The menu is filling and expertly cooked: perhaps potato and garlic soup, pork and cider casserole or blackened salmon, and whiskey trifle or treacle tart to finish up. A cracking village pub.
