Doddington Hall is a grand Tudor pile that was completed in 1600 and has been in the same family ever since. Four centuries of unbroken ownership means it’s host to a fantastic collection of art, textiles, porcelain and weaponry and many visitors revel in the exclusive guided tours. Others come to see the impressive gardens, which have retained an Elizabethan layout in parts and have been left to grow wild in others.
The newest string to the estate’s bow, relatively speaking, is the small shopping complex in what was previously the stables. The farm shop sells fruit and veg from the kitchen garden as well as showcasing the best of regional producers – craft ale, honey, pretty ceramics and Lincolnshire sausages. Next door is a bike shop, country clothing store, Farrow & Ball studio and the scrumptious café, which counts hunger-quashing breakfasts, sandwiches, fish and chips and spelt, feta and beetroot salad amongst its repertoire.
The car park is in the orchard over the road (be careful; it’s fast) and dogs are welcome on the estate’s walks and in the coffee shop.
