The old A30 runs through the historic village of Mitchell. The Plume of Feathers, its 16th-century inn, melds old-world charm with modernity in an old-fashioned pub with an eye-catching glass-roofed extension.
Head chef Andrew Dudley weaves the seasons' magic into his menus. Fresh-scented herbs from the veggie patch enhance the flavours of nature's vast local larder: expect tasty ham and egg with cheesy leek croquettes or locally caught hake with braised leeks and a buttery ham hock and onion mash. Carnivores take note: Wednesday is steak night. There is a big and airy dining room, and a lush green lawn with a dedicated wildlife area stretches up a gentle slope at the rear: perfect if you’ve struck heatwave gold.
There are 20 stylish rooms at the rear (some dog-friendly rooms are available on request) from which you can explore Cornwall and its northern coastline, from foodie Padstowe south to Perranporth or east to Eden.
