Escape the holiday traffic at this belting pit stop, within a minute of the main road. The old A30 runs through the village of Mitchell and the Plume of Feathers, its 16th century inn, melds old-world charm with a spectacular, glass-roofed extension.

The kitchen is run by Head Chef Andrew Dudley, who worked in several prestigious Cornish venues before joining the Plume to work his magic. He uses the best regional and seasonal produce, showcasing the vast local larder as well as the pub's own herb garden and bee hives (you can buy a jar of honey from behind the bar). Dishes change several times a year, but you can expect tasty options such as Cornish lamb with dauphinoise new potatoes, potted venison, locally caught rainbow trout with celeriac and apple remoulade, a shortcrust pie with gravy, mash and kale, or the simple pleasure of a Cornish cream tea.

There’s plenty of room in the airy dining room and a lush green lawn (complete with wildlife area) stretches up a gentle slope at the rear, perfect if you’ve struck gold with your holiday weather. And if you fancy using this as a base for exploring Cornwall, there are 20 stylish rooms at the rear, some of which accommodate dogs too (on request).
