A1

Isaac Newton made his science-enhancing discoveries at Woolsthorpe Manor (now a National Trust site where 'that apple tree' still grows). If you're in this part of Lincolnshire and seek one of the region's favourite country pubs, head to The Green Man. Much-fêted across the Interweb's reviewing platforms, the pub and its staff are compliment-generating machines.

In 2015, Leanne and Phil reinvigorated this failing village pub, ploughing their boundless energy into the food offering to turn it into a cracking spot where community asset meets tea-room meets watering hole, with an excellent kitchen that's open from dawn (well, OK, breakfast) until dusk (dinner). Posies decorate tables and there’s a log burner for cooler days.

Home-cooked country dishes, fresh seafood and roasts run alongside exotic game or crocodile steaks; afternoon teas come on miniature picnic benches (with real ones in the garden for summer). A robust choice for foodies and ale-swillers alike.
