Joan and Nick bought Alder Carr Farm back in 1981 and set about planting various fruit and vegetables to maximise the different soils on the site. During the ‘great raspberry glut’ of 1987 the pair tried their
hand at ice cream making, which turned out to be the nascence of a now-popular Suffolk brand.
Fast forward 30 years and the farm remains a hot bed of entrepreneurialism. Farm shop, craft studio, haberdashery and gift shop have all taken roost in the former farm buildings. The farm shop is well stocked with deli goodies – coleslaw, samosas, cheese, olives – as well as fresh produce and meat from the farm’s own animals.
Step through to the Barn Café to taste what those ingredients can become, whether creamy eggs Benedict, pork pies or farm-worthy slices of carrot cake.
If you’ve got wellies in the boot, make time to explore the farm nature trail, where you can meet the animals and enjoy the idyllic woodland and meadow landscape.
