Whether you want to eat, play or stay, Charleton Fruit Farm awaits. With so many strings to its bow it had to get a bigger quiver, this family-friendly farm is a rejuvenating stop-off.

The happy folk in The Stables serve tasty meals all day long, from soups and salads to ever-popular panini and an arsenal of cakes. There are always tasty specials and even the occasional BBQ; the proper burgers alone are worth the detour. The Pod in the Park (open select weekends outside of summer) is on hand for hot dogs, ice-cream, and teas and coffees to go.

There are fruity PYO seams to be mined into autumn, from pumpkins and raspberries to crumble-ready apples and pears. The farm shop stocks home-sewn crops and local gifts and delicacies galore. Try the Cambus O'May cheese for a strong, creamy, nutty taste of Aberdeenshire dairy goodness.

Kids love scrambling around the wooden fortress and colourful play area, where treasure hunts create excellent journey breaks.
