Metres from the A1, Carnaby’s is the perfect stop for weary travellers on the move through Northumberland. The chic, airy venue is the vision of two sisters, dreamt up over a cup of coffee. The menu is written on rolls of paper fixed to the wall, and might include blueberry and banana pancakes, courgette and sweetcorn fritters, chicken club sandwiches, smoked salmon flatbreads and sausage rolls using pork from their own rare breed pigs. Grab a table in the dining area to make the most of the wood burner in winter while doors open onto the courtyard in warmer months
The modern, airy building is arranged in a L-shape against a hillside, so while the road thrums to one side, the sheltered courtyard to the rear is surprisingly peaceful. It’s enclosed so parents can enjoy an al fresco cuppa while kids enjoy the play area, miniature picnic benches and ride-on tractors.
A shop section at the entrance stocks a relatively small but very tasteful selection of gifts and homewares – stationery, toys, toiletries and clothing.
Dogs are welcome in the courtyard, but not inside.
