One customer described The Larder Delicatessen quite succinctly: “It looks pretty small from the outside, but inside it’s like Mary Poppins’ handbag!”. The unassuming shop front stands on Ripponden’s elongated main street, smart after a recent refurb. The welcome is almost invariably warm and you’ll be drawn quickly into genuine conversation: it’s become something of a networking hub for locals.
Sizzling bacon rolls and cooked breakfasts are on the morning menu and you can lunch on sandwiches made with home-roasted meats and deli goodies, fresh salad boxes, in-house sausage rolls, chicken pies and filled jacket potatoes. Food is freshly made daily in the implausibly compact kitchen (given the volumes), and cooked fresh to order. It’s a hotbed of recipe experimentation too, with the specials board changing weekly: visitors will frequently be asked to taste and review morsels.
The café is similarly bijou so while you can grab a perch at the beautiful wooden breakfast bar if there’s space, gourmet take-aways are readily supplied. Such is the success of the family’s particular formula of great food and warm welcomes, they have opened a second site in nearby Sowerby Bridge which may have space if there’s a crowd here.
