This 'miniature empire' is going from strength to strength at the heart of the pretty village of Upton Magna, between Shrewsbury and Telford.
Mel and Martin own the 17th-century coaching inn next door, The Haughmond. In 2014, they cast an entrepreneurial eye over the pub's outbuildings, converting the stables into The Village Store in 2016, as well as two pet friendly B&B rooms and a self-catering barn conversion. Popular with locals, dog walkers, motorists and cyclists alike (Sustrans cycle routes 81 and 45 both pass nearby), the Store was such a hit that a café with seating opened in 2021. A bakery followed in hot pursuit in 2022, offering afternoon tea and delicious brunches and lunches.
Drive, roll or stroll up for fresh-baked loaves and focaccia or pick up some fresh Winsbury Dairy milk, free-range Hollowdene hens' eggs, Shropshire Distillery gin or craft beer from Hobsons in Ludlow. It's distinctly dog, child and bike friendly.
